Since 2023, Phyllis and her children have volunteered each summer at the Döberitzer Heathland, a nature reserve on the outskirts of Berlin. Characterised by species-rich grassland biotopes, the former military training ground dating back to the Prussian Empire was transformed into a thriving heathland since 1997. It encompasses a mosaic of habitats, including dry grassland, rewetted moor grass areas and other wet meadows. The site is managed by the Sielmann Stiftung network, whose core values centre on biodiversity and ecological stewardship.

Across the vast 5,000-hectare heathland, they spend part of the summer days on a land conservation and ecological husbandry farm founded by a young and dedicated local agriculturist and ecologist. The initiative provides a living model of regenerative land management, maintaining the landscape through traditional grazing practices with various sheep breeds to support ecosystem restoration and the return of diverse species. This long-term approach promotes biodiversity while balancing ecological management with economic efficiency and practical farm benefits.

Living and working closely with the land, Phyllis gains hands-on experience in shepherding and herding, helping to care for the welfare of around 350 sheep and goats. This immersive engagement deepens her understanding of land health, ecological livestock management and sustainable land care, translating regenerative principles into meaningful, lived practice.
