Phyllis' placemaking and curatorial practice investigates gatherings as sites of collective learning and shared authorship. She explores how spatial design can support dialogue, participation and community engagement. Phyllis positions these gatherings not simply as events but as processes that extend into networks, relationships and practices. Drawing on experience in architecture, design and pedagogy, she applies artistic and organisational methods to create conditions for exchange. Each project is conceived as contextually responsive and generative, enabling participants to encounter new ways of connecting across disciplines and perspectives while testing the potential of regenerative and participatory approaches.

In 2024, Phyllis initiated and co-curated Compos(t)ing, a collective platform for Regenerative Creative Practices with a group of like-minded peers. Working with Willem de Kooning Academy, University of the Arts Utrecht, Academy of Theatre and Dance, Centre of Applied Research for Art, Design and Technology and Het Nieuwe Instituut, Phyllis led the conceptual framing, coordination and facilitation of the project. The platform culminated in a public symposium in 2025, creating an interdisciplinary space for experimentation, pedagogy and ecological design. Through Het Nieuwe Instituut, Compos(t)ing was embedded in a wider cultural programme, extending its reach to international audiences and situating the work within ongoing discourses on design, ecology and collective practice. An extensive report of the event is available for download here.

Between 2015 and 2017, Phyllis activated grassroots creative initiatives as a placemaker and ambassador for the ZOHO creative district in Rotterdam. She initiated, curated and organised a series of events, including The Makers Show, Open ZOHO – De Schattentocht, The King & I and The Heliport Hunt, an architectural walk commissioned by the Heliport Housing Association. These projects brought local creative practitioners into dialogue with wider publics and were supported by the Municipality of Rotterdam, Gebiedscommissie Noord and the Rotterdam Art and Culture Fund. These initiatives reflect Phyllis’ flair and experience in coordinating regenerative, community-driven gatherings alongside institutional and governmental partners.
